Namdrol is a traditionalist nut. I discovered the e-sangha today and kept seeing the same name appear again and again with the same short, arrogant vaguely academic leaning. He's basically an angry Buddhist dogmatist. After leaving behind an obsession with dogma, tradition and so-called authentic Tibetan Buddhism, I forgot that so many Buddhist circles are filled with such closed mind folk.

I would like to comment, specifically, about this exchange:

"Malcolm, however, declared that:

'There is no reason to respect the teachings of other religions' Part of the reason, it appears, is that Christians, for instance, 'don't realize emptiness because they do not have the view of emptiness.'

And here's me thinking that we should learn to respect those with whom we disagree!"

When I took refuge with Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche (of KTD in the USA) in the early 1990s, he explained to us that a part of our refuge vow including showing respect to ALL religions. Since taking this vow was, basically, my introduction to how Buddhism is actually practiced (as opposed to gleaning information from books, which I had done up until that time), I am stunned that there are Buddhists--or people calling themselves Buddhists--out there who would disagree with such an idea.

As my mother was fond of saying, "It takes all kinds to make a world, and we've got 'em."

Alex - your comments are very much on target - but until recently I would have defended E-Sangha pretty vigorously. A good forum requires a very firm moderating hand, imho. But, interestingly, also a visible one. Or maybe as the current political buzz-word has it, it requires transparency. This business of disappearing posts, members, and entire sub-fora is disconcerting and disappointing.

Namdrol is a slightly different issue - quite baffling.
