Well knock me over with a tossed feather! When I came to Sydney it appeared that Traleg Rinpoche, whose main centre is in Melbourne, had a finger in the pie here, and was the main Kagyu big-shot for the area. But then the tiny centre closed, he never came to Sydney to give any teachings, and I came to the conclusion that he just wasn’t interested in Sydney. He does, after all, have plenty of other things on his plate. The only positive upshot was getting to know Gary:
(Doesn’t he look respectable?) But I was wrong – quietly, they have got a centre together in Harris Park, soon to open, and yer man will teach there this week-end!

So, were you wrong about Gary being respectable, or about TR coming to Sydney? (Sorry, The Devil made me do it.)
Please give us a report after the weekend, if you can! Inquiring minds will be waiting to hear…

The history of Karma Kagyu in Sydney is long and rather chequered. I was around in the seventies, having returned from India a coupla years after Beru Khyentse’s visit which was organised by the Sydney Karma Kagyus. But the Centre, in its various locations, never really became a powerhouse. Then sometime after I left Sydney I heard that the Centre had been taken over by this controversial chap who’d started coming to pujas when I’d been there. Rather disorganised, i wouldn’t have picked him as a power-tripper. But apparently it all got very political, even though they had a resident lama (NESB).
Don’t think it got much better in the eighties.
