I think you must be confusing something else with Ron. To be honest, what you write sounds like the story from Little Buddha. Admittedly that film came out later than what you describe, but the time-slip is not as great as the one between your memory and Ron's actual life. If you can provide a checkable citation I will be surprised, but also very interested. I remember the year well as i had just graduated high school and spent the entire summer watching TV. The afternoon news programs had just begun that year, they didn't carry the heavy news, but had stories of interest instead. I remember vividly they spoke of Tibetan elders who had been expecting their Teacher to appear in the West (N. America) based on his predictions from his past life, telling them where to look for him. Then they showed these old Tibetan guys ambling up a steep hill with young Buddha Maitreya waving happily to them. I remember thinking, "I bet i would love hanging out with that guy" because Buddha Maitreya looked like the nicest guy in the world. Happy and lighthearted too, something very rare except in children, such an abandon of anger and shyness. I never heard much of him after that, but happening upon this thread, i felt the need to share.
